Half Hourly Metering
What are half hourly meters?
Half hourly meters are a type of electricity meter, used to measure how much electricity has been used every half hour. The meter automatically sends these readings to the electricity supplier and therefore, there are no estimated bills. This ensures that your business is only paying for the electricity it has actually used, and there is no need to take manual meter reads.
What kind of businesses have half hourly meters?
Businesses with a high energy usage where their authorised supply capacity is 100kVa or more, are required to have a half hourly metering contract.
How can we help?
The half hourly contract negotiation process is far more complicated than a standard business energy contract. The supplier gets up to date information on your business energy usage every half hour, and can therefore charge in line with fluctuating market prices. The energy market is notoriously volatile and therefore requires a great deal of analysis and strategy to determine the best time to lock in rates.
Here at MDG Energy, we have expert knowledge in half hourly contract negotiation. Prices fluctuate from day to day, therefore it is essential to analyse the market and predict when prices are likely to fall to the optimum level. This can be a time consuming and lengthy process so let us take away the stress and hassle of the contract negotiation.
We also provide help and guidance to businesses who have received notice that they must switch to a half hourly contract. This can be a daunting experience and you may be placed on much higher prices than you could access with the help of a consultant like MDG Energy.
Red Zone Optimisation
Half hourly supplies can be placed on a Red, Amber and Green Zone tariff, which is intended to restrict electricity usage during peak times. By avoiding the red zone time period, there are potential savings to be made. Based on your business needs, we can identify and help implement these changes, uncovering savings to your bottom line.
National Grid Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR)
“National Grid need access to sources of extra power in the form of either generation or demand reduction, to be able to deal with unforeseen demand increase and/or generation unavailability.” National Grid.
MDG Energy can provide advice and guidance to appropriate businesses on joining STOR. Throughout the year there are potential shortages of electricity and in order to cope with the demand, members of STOR are on stand-by to turn off their electricity.
The financial benefit achieved from being part of STOR is that you would be paid to be on stand-by throughout the year, and also paid for turning off your electricity when the call came from the National Grid.

We will manage the project from start to finish, ensuring that you can focus on the other key aspects of the build.
